BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
A day after the chaotic Lionel Messi event turned Saltkake Stadium into a scene of ruckus and vandalism, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose visited the venue to check the aftermath firsthand. He blamed the organizers and police administration for poor crowd control, saying he had warned the state earlier about such issues but nothing was done. The Governor spent time inspecting the stadium, calling it a failure that disappointed more than thousands of fans who came to see their football hero.
Meanwhile, a high-level enquiry SIT team formed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also arrived today and started their investigation. The team led by retired Justice Asim Kumar Roy, the commission included Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, Sports Secretary Rajesh Sinha inspected the stadium premises. Bidhannagar CP Shri Mukesh and Deputy CP Anil Sarkar were also present.
They walked through the entire stadium, took videos of the damaged areas like broken chairs and tents, and gathered details on site. Justice Roy said the team is working actively and strictly, with discussions starting late the previous night. He stressed that the probe will look into all sides, including possible compensation for affected fans, and suggest ways to stop such problems in future events. The commission plans to submit a report soon, answering why the chaos happened and who is responsible. This quick action comes after fans vandalized parts of the stadium when they could not see Messi properly, leading to apologies from the CM Mamata Banerjee herself. The visits highlight efforts to fix accountability and rebuild trust for big sports events in Kolkata.
Yesterday, amid vandalism in Saltlake Stadium the main event organizer Satadru Dutta has been arrested from Kolkata airport. Today, he was produced in Bidhannagar Court and was given Police Custody (PC) for 14 days. Bengal Police DG Rajeev Kumar said yesterday in a press conference "Legal action and steps will be taken if the ticket money is not refunded to the spectators." According to Bengal DGP, the money should be refunded to the viewers. Mukesh Kumar, CP Bidhannagar also confirmed of no reports of any audiences being injured yet but 4 police officers have been injured.
As per reports, Messi seemed confused and asked his team, "Since I came inside, I am only walking this side and that side. What is happening?". Instead, the poor planning caused frustration, with fans throwing objects and damaging seats. While Lionel Messi, Suarez and De Paul sat in the car, members of Team Messi were firm in their decision to not continue with the event. Event organiser Satadru Dutta, sports minister Aroop Biswas and West Bengal police DGP Rajeev Kumar were seen trying to convince Team Messi, but it doesn't led to fruitful results.
